Chapter 17: Job Readiness Training and Job Placement

17.1 Job Readiness Training (JRT)

17.1.1 Definition of Job Readiness Training

Job Readiness Training (JRT) is a comprehensive set of discrete learning objectives organized into six sections. JRT, which may be purchased as a complete course or by section, prepares the consumer for the job search, employment, and retention. JRT is divided into the following training sections:

JRT Is Not for Consumers in Supported Employment

Job Readiness Training is not a component of Supported Employment. For consumers with multiple disabilities and functional limitations who require ongoing supports, see Chapter 30: Supported Employment Services.

Note: Most consumers who fail at a job do so not because they lack the necessary job skills, but because they lack the necessary independent living skills or mobility. Please review the Job Readiness Criteria before referring consumers for Job Readiness Training or Job Placement. Consumers who need extensive services may need Work Adjustment Training (WAT) or Personal and Social Adjustment Training (PSAT).

Counselors must use only vendors who are approved for JRT.

Fees for Job Readiness Training are found in the Standards Manual for Consumer Services Contract Providers.

17.2 Job Placement (JP)

17.2.1 Counselor Responsibilities

The primary goal in the VR program is for each consumer to obtain employment consistent with their vocational goal as listed on the IPE.

It is the responsibility of the VR Counselor to assist the consumer in achieving their goal. This responsibility cannot be delegated. The counselor can, however, use other resources such as the consumer, relatives, consumer groups, community organizations, and outside vendors to assist in this process. Counselors should only refer a consumer who is job ready for job placement services. The consumer should be in a position to accept employment immediately, if offered (assuming all accessibility issues have been addressed).

17.2.2 Fees

Fees for Job Placement are found in the DBS Standards Manual for Consumer Services Contract Providers, Chapter 3: Rates, 3.2 Service Rates.
